'Scripture is not a spectator sport'

I hopped on Damian's website, and my eyes were drawn to a quote from one of his theology professors: "Scripture is not a spectator sport." I could go into picky questions like: "Ought we think of it as a SPORT?", but I'm actually bringing this up for a more personal reason. You see, I feel that my Scripture intake these days is generally passive (i.e., me as spectator). I go to a church with extraordinary teaching giftings right and left, and so it becomes easy to just sit and take it all in. And sometimes we just need to do that. But, I honestly give more rigorous thought and analysis to the texts I am reading for my French classes than the Bible, and this bothers me. What an indictment!

Hey, fellow pilgrims: what do you do to keep Scripture from becoming a "spectator sport"?
