Champagne + Chairs = Champagne Chairs!

Anyone up for a good time next Thursday, 6-8pm? Steph and I will be there. Let loose your wild creative streak by wearing all black and hanging out in the company of uber-cool design folk in Uptown. CJ & Jesse, you should be all over this one.

RSVP to minneapolis@dwr.com by Tuesday the 29th.

Okay, David. It does look pretty fascinating. But CHAMPAGNE CHAIRS? I'm sorry. That's AT LEAST as nerdy as the oft-taunted question "What's your favorite flour?" Maybe we just all need to admit here that we're all nerds...

Thanks everybody. There's nothing like being 75% Board Certified for Profession-Rocking (the last of four exams happens in the fall).

There will be a graduation party, I assure you.

Warm Beer, Cold Women

An aquaintance of mine is producing, directing and starring in this tribute at the Music Box to the music of Tom Waits. "Bums, lovers, and bummed lovers."

'Scripture is not a spectator sport'

I hopped on Damian's website, and my eyes were drawn to a quote from one of his theology professors: "Scripture is not a spectator sport." I could go into picky questions like: "Ought we think of it as a SPORT?", but I'm actually bringing this up for a more personal reason. You see, I feel that my Scripture intake these days is generally passive (i.e., me as spectator). I go to a church with extraordinary teaching giftings right and left, and so it becomes easy to just sit and take it all in. And sometimes we just need to do that. But, I honestly give more rigorous thought and analysis to the texts I am reading for my French classes than the Bible, and this bothers me. What an indictment!

Hey, fellow pilgrims: what do you do to keep Scripture from becoming a "spectator sport"?

Jolly good witticisms, aphorisms, etc.

A million lbs. of Chesterton! (yay...)

And lest you be in danger of thinking that Chesteron is only good for a clever quote here and there, check out The Man Who Was Thursday, Manalive, and a shorter bit, A Piece of Chalk. Glorious.

For completeness' sake, one should also bone up on the cleverly subtle pop culture reference.

Anyone else familiar with GKC?

I "had" to read A Piece of Chalk in Freshman Comp (what a chore) and thought it brillant back then. These days, I only seem to have time for such abridged forms of profundity. (Outside of regular classwork.) So, I thank God for Psalms, Proverbs, short essays, "shorts" on Homestarrunner, anything else I can microwave and pop in my mouth on my way out the door...

I must say, if yu're feeling rather stale in your everyday routine, read "Manalive." I just finished it for the very first time. (Thank you David for the website!) It is a strange and wonderous story.
